Services

At the Bowerman Sports Science Center, we are constantly looking for new and improved ways to evaluate and observe human performance, whether it be for running, biking, or any field or court sport. If the following information does not display the specific evaluation you are looking for, feel free to contact us and let us know your fitness and health goals. We will do what we can to help you out!

Biomechanical Testing

Running mechanics services provide biomechanical analyses of your running technique using state-of-the-art measurement techniques to help prevent injury improve overall performance.

Our facilities and equipment allow us to capture and measure the motion of your limbs, the forces you produce in your joints, and pressure mapping of your feet while you run. Using this information, in combination with muscle strength and range of motion measurements, we can provide feedback about your running technique that may help prevent injury and improve your overall performance.

The amount of detailed analysis we do will depend on your specific needs and budget. We offer the following:

  • Quantitative Force Analysis: $190
  • Quantitative Motion Analysis: $120
  • Pressure Distribution Analysis: $100
  • Biodex Dynamometry: $100

Please refer to Exercise Testing at the BSSC for more information.

Exercise Physiology

Exercise physiology services provide measurements of sport performance capacity as an aid in assessing your personal athletic capabilities or as a measure of improvement throughout a training program. We offer four measurements:

VO2 Max test with Polar Heart Rate Monitor: A graded exercise trial evaluating aerobic capacity, providing an accurate estimate of ventilatory and anaerobic threshold which is useful in developing training protocols. $125*

Lactate Threshold Test: A series of tests that use blood samples during graded exercise protocols to determine the onset of blood lactate accumulation (OBLA); the point at which your body can no longer maintain the current intensity level for a prolonged period of time. The lactate threshold can be used to determine target training zones to maximize performance. $165*
Lactate Field Test (customized to sport) $75*

Hybrid VO2 Max & Lactate Threshold Test: Combines components of the VO2 Max Test and the Lactate Threshold Test for the highly trained athlete. Full analysis yields estimates of running economy and efficiency. $205*

Integrated physiology Assessment: Center staff will design, administer and/or analyze customized protocols to fit client’s personal interests. Price is based on a hourly rate, for more information please contact us directly. $160/hr

Please refer to Exercise Testing at the BSSC for more information.

Body Composition

Body composition services provide measurement of your body’s fat to muscle ratio. These measures are useful indicators of overall health and can be used as a tool to track health improvements throughout a training program.

DXA Scans: The BSSC offers DXA scans with a physician’s referral. Please refer to DXA Scans at the BSSC for more information. $170

Skin-fold testing: Skin-fold measurements are taken at 7 different sites of the body using specially designed calipers. These measurements are used to estimate an individual’s relative body fat. It is the most popular and practical method available to assess body composition. This method is practical a way to analyze composition but lacks accuracy for atypical body types. $45*

Resting Metabolic Rate: A test measuring the utilization of oxygen during resting conditions that allows the calculation of the minimal amount of energy required for running basic physiological functions. Testing metabolic rate requires athletes to be fasted and rested before energy expenditure is measured through indirect calorimetry. The athlete’s expired air is analyzed while they are relaxed in an environmentally controlled state. Energy expenditure is then determined through measurements of oxygen utilization. $90*

*All prices are subject to change. Our center also offers group rates of only three or more individuals and special University of Oregon internal pricing. For a quoted price specific to your situation, please inquire.

The BSSC does not bill insurance providers for services and can only accept payment in the form of check.
